Why chat stories are impossible to leave halfway
A good chat story creates an unanswered question in its first two messages. The reader does not stay for the interface; they stay to close that gap.
Start at the moment something changes
Skip greetings and setup. “Why is your car outside her apartment?” gives the reader a conflict, characters and a mystery in one line.
Let each message change the meaning
The strongest stories alternate between an answer and a new doubt. A believable detail makes the exchange feel lived-in; a reveal makes it worth sharing.
End with a choice
Stories travel when friends can debate them. A final message that forces a choice turns passive watching into “you need to see this.”
